Directions
Before you begin
- Clean instruments thoroughly: Remove all blood and body fluids from instruments, lumens, and other surfaces before disinfection.
- Ensure full contact: Instruments must be fully disassembled and rinsed. For instruments with lumens, cleanse and rinse the lumens before filling with the solution.
- Use proper PPE: Wear nitrile or butyl rubber gloves, goggles, and a face shield. Latex gloves are not adequate protection.
- Check the product: Confirm you have a ready-to-use product (no dilution needed) or are following the correct activation and use-life instructions, such as the 28-day long-life solution.
Disinfection and sterilization process
- Full immersion: Submerge all surfaces of the instrument completely in the McKesson 28-Day Glutaraldehyde solution.
- Disinfection time: Immerse for a minimum of 90 minutes for high-level disinfection at 25°C.
- Sterilization time: Immerse for a minimum of 10 hours for sterilization at 25°C.
- Rinse instruments: After the immersion time is complete, rinse the instruments thoroughly with sterile or filtered water.
- Dry and store: Dry the instruments with a lint-free cloth and store them appropriately.
Important considerations
- Solution lifespan: The solution can be reused for a maximum of 28 days after activation. A tag should be attached indicating the processing date and expiration date.
- Safety: Glutaraldehyde is a toxic chemical that requires proper handling. Always use the solution in a well-ventilated area and follow all safety precautions.
- Product limitations: Some glutaraldehyde products are not recommended for use on scopes or any instrument with a lens due to the risk of film development. Always consult the specific product insert.
