About McKesson Gelling Fiber Dressing
McKesson Gelling Fiber Dressing is a sterile, non-woven wound dressing designed for moderately to heavily exuding chronic and acute wounds. It's made from a blend of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and high-G calcium alginate fibers that transform into a soft, cohesive gel on contact with wound exudate, helping to maintain a moist environment that supports the healing process. It may be used as part of wound care for pressure ulcers, venous and arterial leg ulcers, diabetic ulcers, graft and donor sites, post-operative surgical wounds, superficial and partial-thickness burns, and cavity wounds, and should be used under the guidance of a healthcare provider.
Key Benefits & Features
- Sterile, non-woven sheet combining CMC and high-G calcium alginate fibers
- High gelling action supports a moist wound environment to help promote healing
- Transforms into a clear, soft, cohesive gel on contact with wound exudate, which may assist with autolytic debridement
- Reinforced quilting pattern is designed to improve absorbency, tensile performance, and wound bed contact
- Excellent wet and dry strength helps the dressing stay intact during removal at dressing change
- Low lateral wicking action helps minimize the risk of excoriation and maceration to wound and peri-wound skin
- Calcium ions in the alginate fibers exchange with sodium ions in wound exudate, which may help support the wound healing process
- Square sheet measures 4 in x 4.75 in (10.2 cm x 12.1 cm); not made with natural rubber latex
McKesson Gelling Fiber Dressing FAQs
What types of wounds is this dressing designed for?
McKesson Gelling Fiber Dressing is designed for moderately to heavily exuding chronic and acute wounds. It may be used during the healing process for pressure ulcers, venous and arterial leg ulcers, diabetic ulcers, graft and donor sites, post-operative surgical wounds, superficial and partial-thickness burns, and cavity wounds. It's intended for use by, or under the direction of, a healthcare provider — always follow your clinician's guidance for your specific wound.
How absorbent is this dressing?
This dressing is highly absorbent and formulated for moderate- to high-exuding wounds. On contact with wound exudate, the fibers gel to help create a favorable, moist environment for wound management, while low lateral wicking helps reduce the risk of maceration to the wound and surrounding skin.
How is this dressing applied and removed?
A clinician will typically cleanse and debride the wound, then select a dressing sized slightly larger than the wound area, loosely packing deeper wounds without overlapping the wound margins. The dressing is then covered with a non-occlusive or semi-occlusive secondary dressing. At removal, the secondary dressing is taken off gently, and if the dressing appears dry, it can be saturated with sterile saline first to ease removal. This dressing should only be applied and removed by, or under the direction of, a healthcare professional.
How often does this dressing need to be changed?
This dressing may remain in place for up to 7 days, though it's typically changed when the secondary dressing reaches its absorbent capacity, or as directed by your healthcare provider based on the wound's condition.
Is this dressing latex-free?
Yes, McKesson Gelling Fiber Dressing is not made with natural rubber latex.
