About Nurse Assist USP Sterile Water
USP Sterile Water is water-for-injection (WFI) quality water that has been sterilized and packaged in single-use pour bottles for use in clinical and home health applications. Unlike normal saline, sterile water is hypotonic and should not be used as an intravenous fluid or in large-volume wound irrigation without clinical guidance, as it can disrupt cellular osmotic balance in large amounts. However, it is widely used and appropriate for many clinical applications including wound irrigation in specific protocols, rinsing of medical equipment such as nebulizer components, CPAP and humidifier water chambers, nasal irrigation devices, urological irrigation in prescribed protocols, and as a diluent for concentrated medications. USP Sterile Water is manufactured to United States Pharmacopeia pharmaceutical standards for sterility and purity. Available in 100 mL and 250 mL single-use pour bottles sold in cases.

Nurse Assist USP Sterile Water FAQs
What is the difference between sterile water and normal saline for wound irrigation?
Normal saline (0.9% NaCl) is isotonic and is the preferred wound irrigation fluid because it does not cause osmotic stress on healing cells. Sterile water is hypotonic and can cause cellular damage in large volumes. For most wound irrigation, normal saline is preferred. Sterile water is primarily used for equipment rinsing, dilution, CPAP humidifiers, and nebulizer use.
Can I use sterile water in my CPAP humidifier?
Yes. Distilled water or sterile water is recommended for CPAP humidifier chambers. Using tap water may introduce minerals and microorganisms. Sterile water is an appropriate and safe alternative to distilled water for this purpose.
Can sterile water be used in a nebulizer?
Yes. Sterile water is used to rinse nebulizer components and, in some protocols, as a diluent for nebulized medications. Follow your clinician's or medication instructions for appropriate use.
Is each bottle single-use?
Yes. USP Sterile Water is packaged in single-use pour bottles. Discard any remaining water after opening — do not reseal and reuse an opened bottle, as sterility cannot be guaranteed after opening.
Can sterile water be injected intravenously?
No. Large volumes of sterile water should not be administered IV as it is hypotonic and can cause hemolysis and other serious complications. It is for irrigation and equipment use only unless specifically formulated and labeled as a sterile water for injection diluent in a labeled, supervised clinical protocol.
Are these available for home health use?
Yes. USP Sterile Water pour bottles are widely used in home health settings for CPAP equipment, nebulizer maintenance, and wound care programs.
