How do I know if I have the cold or flu? What’s the difference?

At first, the cold and the flu can feel similar because they have similar symptoms. However, there are some noticeable signs to help you spot the difference.

  • A cold typically goes away after a day or two, though they can last for up to a week. Symptoms include runny nose, sore throat, and a cough. While some people do get a slight fever, fevers with colds are uncommon.

  • The flu lasts much longer, sometimes weeks at a time. While symptoms also include sore throat and a cough, additional flu symptoms include headache, muscle aches and soreness, and occasionally, vomiting or diarrhea.

The clearest way to decide if you have a cold or flu is to check your temperature: a cold is rarely accompanied by a high fever, but flus often are.

Older adults are especially at risk of pneumonia, which can sometimes follow the flu. If you think you may have more serious flu symptoms or pneumonia, consult your doctor immediately. Be sure to keep up-to-date on flu shots so you aren’t at risk.

How do I choose the best cold and flu medicine?

Fortunately, there are many over-the-counter cold and flu medications that can help you feel better, faster. Look for combination flu and cold medicine to fight both illnesses and their symptoms. Experiencing aches and pains? Try some of our other medicine like ibuprofen or aspirin, pain relievers that can ease your aches.

Does taking medicine mean I’m not contagious?

Taking medicine to fight cold and flu does not mean you aren’t contagious. To protect your friends, family, and coworkers, be sure you’re staying home if you feel ill.
